Ambient music, originally meant to be 'as ignorable as it is interesting' has become associated with gentleness and comfort, a genre relegated to chill-out rooms. Noise, on the other hand, is characterized by aggression, loudness, and an intention to shake up the listener. This listening session regards both genres as lying along the same continuum, rather than being opposing forces. Both are, at their best, oceans of sound inviting you to set yourself adrift, perhaps at the risk of being caught in a storm. Musician and performer Anthony Kroytor will present a selection of notable ambient, drone, and noise recordings interspersed with live improvisations on synthesiser. Expect laid-back intensity, from the hum of the cosmic microwave background to the crackle of no-input mixers and the sustained notes of harmoniums and sine wave generators. Created with a combination of digital and traditional techniques, Anthony Kroytor's audiovisual work is a reflection on modernity using the language of remix and juxtaposition. His training in philosophy frames and structures his work, and its sonic and rhythmic elements stem from his experience as a musician. He is particularly interested in the intersection and overlap of the human with the nonhuman, the impersonal. His research interests lie in the field of cross-cultural philosophy, particularly in the role played by emotions in the development of worldviews, ontologies, and aesthetics.
